Ever wondered what an investment of 10,000 BTC was worth back in 2010? $41 worth of Papa John’s pizzas. This shows just how wild the digital asset market can be and highlights its growth over the years.

Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Cardano and Binance Coin all hit their all-time highs in 2021.

This is not the case for only bitcoin but also for a variety of other digital assets. Especially over the last year, we saw a cumulative market cap growth of almost 500%.

That said, let’s find out the best crypto investments in 2021, ranked by Returns On Investment (ROI).

Digital Asset Launch Year Market Cap ROI (Since launch) Price (Jan 1) Price (Oct 24)
Bitcoin 2009 $1.1T 762499900% $28,990 $61,000*
Ethereum 2015 $476.6B 618556% $737.89 $4,145*
Binance Coin 2017 $80.3B 325900% $37.38 $489*
Solana 2020 $60.4 24237% $1.51 $202*
Cardano 2017 $70B 12782% $0.18 $2.19*

1. Bitcoin (762,499,900 Percent ROI)

Bitcoin is the world’s first digital asset, and it still holds the first position in terms of market cap value ($1.250T) and price. Bitcoin was created back in 2009 by someone under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto.

It runs on blockchain, a technology specifically developed for Bitcoin to ensure that transactions are kept transparent, secure, and safe.

Even with the ups and downs over the past decade, bitcoin has still seen massive growth. Just this month bitcoin managed to surpass its all-time price at $66,000.

One year ago today, you could buy a bitcoin for about $12,000, as of October 2021, a single bitcoin is over $61,000. This registers a 442% growth over the year and an over 762,499,900% increase in value since launch.

2. Ethereum (618,556 Percent ROI)

Ether is the second-largest digital asset with a market capitalization of $486.98B. Unlike bitcoin, Ethereum is more than a digital currency. Ethereum is also an open-source decentralized platform that enables smart contracts and DApps without control from a third party.

Ether (ETH), Ethereum’s digital token, goes for about $4,145 and has additionally hit its all-time high at $4,362 this month.

Ethereum has had an overall good year with a steady rise from November 2020 to late May 2021 when there was a steep drop. From there, Ethereum made a comeback hitting its all-time high in the process in October 2021.

The growth is even more tremendous when you consider that Ether’s price was about $10 just 4 years ago. That’s a 41,000% growth over the same period of time and a 618,556% rally since launch.

3. Binance Coin (325,900 Percent ROI)

Binance is the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange that facilitates massive trading volumes every day. Binance coin (BNB), which is the native token of the exchange platform, aims to reduce transaction fees for users.

Binance coin was created in 2017 and since then it has developed from solely facilitating trades on the Binance exchange platform. It can now be traded for other forms of digital assets like ether or bitcoin. Additionally, it can be used for everyday tasks like payment processing, or even paying for travel arrangements on some websites.

Binance has a maximum of 200 million BNB tokens allowed to exist. The main reason for the supply cap is to add a level of scarcity to the token. Additionally, Binance ‘burns’ a portion of the token every three months, this is a process of destroying tokens to decrease supply.

That said, BNB’s popularity has grown even more in 2021. BNB has seen a steady price rise from January 2021 when it was about $40 to hit an all-time high at $690 in May 2021. At the time of writing, BNB’s price is around $489.

4. Solana (24,237 Percent ROI)

Solana is considered one of Ethereum’s major rivals. It is similarly a blockchain platform that has been designed to host DApps. Solana became even more popular as it offered solutions that its rivals were struggling to deliver, low transaction fees, and faster operation.

Additionally, unlike Bitcoin and Ethereum, Solana is a proof of stake blockchain. This makes it more environmentally friendly as opposed to proof of work blockchains where a massive amount of energy is used for mining.

That said, Solana has had a meteoric rise ever since it was launched in April 2020. This has made it one of the fastest-growing digital assets in 2021. Solana kicked off 2021 at a trading price of $1.86. When writing this blog, Solana goes for about $202. Therefore, an investment of $1000 at the beginning of the year would be worth about $108,601 at the time of writing.

The introduction of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to Solana has also helped to increase awareness of the token. Additionally, some new NFT projects use Solana’s blockchain over Ethereum’s due to lower transaction fees.

5. Cardano (12,782 Percent ROI)

Cardano is a decentralized blockchain platform that was launched in 2017. Cardano was created with an aim of solving underlying problems in the blockchain industry like scalability issues in consensus mechanisms (used to approve transactions) and providing a secure blockchain that is less prone to attacks.

Cardano has maintained a top 10 position in terms of market capitalization at a value of just over $67 billion. As for growth in price, it has seen a fairly modest increase when compared to other major tokens.

ADA, Cardano’s native token, went for about $0.017 back in 2017. At the time of writing, ADA goes for around $2.19, a 12,782% growth since launch. That said, ADA joins the list of tokens to have hit their all-time high this year. This happened in early September 2021 at $3.10.

Even though Cardano is still at its early stages it still seems to stand out among its proof of stake blockchain peers.

Digital assets are here to stay and are poised to continue to grow. One thing you should always keep in mind is that this market is not a get-rich-quick scheme. And the value of investments can go up and down. Therefore, you should consider having a robust investment plan in place.
