A wealthy businessman has put up a $500K reward for anyone that can help him recover his stolen safe containing $4 million in cryptocurrency. According to a story by the NZ Herald, thieves broke into his family home in Westmere, Auckland, and stole $10K in cash, Tag Hauer and Rolex watches, diamond jewelry, and family heirlooms.

Details Of The Heist

According to the victim, Mark Geor, the burglars executed the heist with surgical precision. He added that they knew exactly where the security cameras were located as well as where to find the safe. According to Geor, the burglars will not have any idea what they find in the safe.

Mike Campbell, a private investigator, believes the heist took place between 8.30 PM and Midnight on 9-10 September. According to Campbell, the reward offered by Geor was an appeal to the criminals to return the contents of the safe.

Campbell said that they had been following several leads but they had all fizzled out. He said that some who had contacted them had been “economical with the truth.” The PI added that thus far, the crypto had not yet been touched. Besides that, nobody had come forward to claim the safe had been pried open. According to Campbell, the safe was probably still intact somewhere and someone out there knew something.

CCTV footage from the neighbors shows that the suspect may have driven a white Subaru Legacy Wagon and a 2005 Toyota Ute with a hood on its back between 9 PM and 9.30 PM. One neighbor even claims they had spotted a suspicious person in the area two days before the burglary.

Campbell added that the safe had been bolted to the concrete floor and weighed around 160 kilos. Thus, it would require a big person to cut it and move it out of the cupboard in the stairwell. He added that the thieves had to drag it across the room and place it on a wheelbarrow to move it to the front and have a large enough vehicle to carry it.

Campbell said that it was the first crypto heist he had been involved in since he became a PI 40 years ago. He has asked the public to call 0800 384 4227 if they have any information.

How The Thieves Got In

Geor first noticed something was off on September 10, 2021, when he noticed a wheelbarrow with a pillow on it. He realized that thieves had broken into the house via a side door where there were no security cameras. They then switched off power and disarmed the alarm and backup power.

Commenting on the heist, a spokesperson for the police said that the issue was still under investigation and they could not comment on it. While there is no evidence that the safe has been cracked or funds have been stolen, Geor is unable to claim insurance for the crypto. He said that insurers did not cover his crypto. He added that he felt stupid for storing all his possessions in the safe.
